Small Comforts, Big Impact - Event Hygiene Is No Minor Detail

In the Netherlands, one retail chain came up with a brilliantly human solution to the age-old problem of public toilet shortages during large-scale events. But this isn’t just a Dutch issue — it’s universal.
In Bulgaria too, every major festival, fair, parade, or even a weekend in the park brings the same question: Where can I go to the toilet? — a question that often remains unanswered.
Thuistoilet – an unconventional solution to public toilet shortages in the Netherlands
During the national holiday King’s Day, when thousands of Dutch people dress in orange and flood the streets, retail chain HEMA launched the Thuistoilet (Home Toilet) campaign. Private homes in 10 cities were temporarily turned into an improvised network of accessible toilets for the public.
Hosts received a starter kit with cleaning and hygiene supplies and decided for themselves when and whom to let in. For everyone else, an online map showed where a door might be open in case of urgent need.
The campaign didn’t just solve a logistical problem. It showed that even the need for a toilet can be a chance for connection, empathy, and shared humanity.
Timely planning prevents awkward situations
In Bulgaria, similar scenarios play out regularly — gatherings, music festivals, holidays, park events. But proper sanitary infrastructure is rarely planned in advance, and even more rarely in sufficient quantity.
The result? Long queues, inconvenience, improvised solutions, and sometimes even serious hygiene risks.
There are solutions. We don’t need to open our homes, as they did in the Netherlands — we just need to plan ahead and provide the right facilities, scaled to the size of the event.

OoYes – where hygiene is part of the celebration, not the problem
At OoYes, we’re used to stepping in at just the right moment — when fun and comfort need to go hand in hand. We offer a wide range of solutions suited for all types of events:
- Chemical toilets – quick to install, easy to maintain, and highly efficient
- VIP vacuum toilet trailers – with sinks, mirrors, air conditioning, and a stylish interior
- Sanitary containers – ideal for longer or larger events, with showers and full hygiene zones
- Mobile sinks and sanitizing stations – for clean hands, anywhere
- On-site planning and support – so everything stays clean, safe, and worry-free
To us, a toilet is not just a technicality — it’s part of the experience. It’s a sign that the organizers care. That they respect people’s needs. That they want the event to be memorable for the right reasons — not for the lack of basic comfort.
Open Doors, Clear Conscience
The Thuistoilet campaign is a great example of a creative solution to a practical challenge. At OoYes, we believe Bulgaria too can create cleaner, more accessible, and more human-friendly public spaces — whether for national holidays, regional festivals, or local markets.
So next time you’re planning an event — don’t let the toilet be an afterthought.
Let it be part of your care.
