How Many Portable Toilets Do You Need for an Event?

OoYes explains how many portable toilets are needed for festivals, concerts and outdoor events based on EN 16194, visitor numbers, event duration and food and drink availability.

How Many Portable Toilets Do You Need for an Event?

Planning the right number of portable toilets is an essential part of organising any festival, concert or large public event. Visitor numbers are important, but they are not the only factor to consider. Event duration, food and drink availability, camping areas, VIP zones and site-specific requirements can all affect the number of toilets needed.

The European standard EN 16194 provides recommended minimum ratios for portable toilets at festivals, concerts and other outdoor events.

The recommendations are based on three main factors:

  • the number of visitors;
  • the duration of the event;
  • whether food and drinks are available on site.

When an event includes food and beverage areas, portable toilets are used more frequently. For this reason, EN 16194 recommends providing more toilets than for events where food and drinks are not available.

Recommended Number of Portable Toilets According to EN 16194

The figures provided by EN 16194 are minimum recommendations and should be used as a starting point when planning event sanitation.
In practice, organisers should also consider factors such as how visitors are distributed across the venue, camping areas, expected peak periods, site layout and the ratio of male to female visitors, as women typically use toilet facilities more frequently than men.

For example, for a one-day event with 10,000 visitors, the recommendation is 286 portable toilets when no food or drinks are available and 334 portable toilets when food and beverage areas are provided.

That means nearly 50 additional portable toilets may be required simply because of the higher expected usage.

How Many Portable Toilets Are Needed Based on Visitor Numbers?

The following table shows the approximate number of portable toilets required for some of the most common event sizes, based on the recommendations in EN 16194.

The calculations use the recommended EN 16194 ratios and are rounded up to the nearest whole toilet.

In practice, organisers of large events in Bulgaria often provide fewer portable toilets than the recommended minimum.

This can result in longer queues, lower visitor comfort and more difficult servicing during the event. Insufficient sanitation capacity can also affect how much time visitors spend away from food and beverage areas and negatively influence their overall event experience.

OoYes helps event organisers determine not only how many portable toilets are required, but also which sanitation solution is most suitable for the size, duration and specific requirements of each event.

Depending on the project, this can include conventional portable toilets, vacuum toilet systems, VIP vacuum toilet trailers, portable handwashing stations and other temporary sanitation facilities.
