Open Day at the Oldest Salt-Producing Center in Europe

On September 22, when Bulgaria celebrates its Independence Day, Provadia–Solnitsata opened its doors to visitors. The archaeological complex is considered the oldest salt-production center in Europe, and the traditional Open Day once again welcomed hundreds of guests from across the country.

A Journey Back in Time

Visitors followed a specially designed route available only on the holiday. Led by Acad. Vasil Nikolov and his team, groups heard fascinating stories about salt production in the Late Prehistoric period, the birth of the first salt-workers’ settlement, and how salt transformed the area into one of the earliest economic hubs on the continent.

Highlights included demonstrations of prehistoric architecture and the presentation of a vertical loom – a fully functioning structure shown for the very first time. At the entrance, a children’s corner gave the youngest guests the chance to create and learn more about the lives of their distant ancestors.

An Event with a Cause

The Open Day coincided with the European Heritage Days, offering visitors not only the opportunity to experience history but also to help preserve it. Donations collected during the event will support ongoing conservation and restoration work at the complex.

Comfort and Convenience by OoYes

For hundreds of people to fully enjoy the experience, good organization was essential. OoYes contributed by providing mobile chemical toilets, ensuring comfort and peace of mind for visitors throughout the day. We believe that large-scale events – whether festivals, sports competitions, or encounters with history – require modern solutions to be truly accessible for everyone.

History That Continues to Live

Provadia–Solnitsata is a place that proves Bulgaria carries heritage of global significance. Each Open Day is not just a walk through archaeology but a chance to feel part of a long chain of generations that create, preserve, and pass on knowledge.

OoYes was there – together with everyone who wanted to touch this history and bring it to life.
