The "Tryavna Ultra" mountain ultramarathon took place in the heart of the Balkans, where competitors challenged themselves across five different distances—153, 100, 80, 42, and 21 kilometers. Hosted by the town of Tryavna, the event attracted participants from 34 countries, making it one of the most challenging and scenic races in the region.
Start of the Race
The start for the longest distance of 153 km was at 5:00 PM on July 12th. Participants had to overcome not only the large distance but also a significant elevation gain of 6,400 meters, crossing the ridge of the Stara Planina twice, and passing through iconic locations like Shipka and Buzludzha. The same day also saw the start of a new 100-kilometer distance that passed through the "Bulgarka" Nature Park. On Saturday morning at 7:00 AM, the shorter distances commenced. In addition to the main races, over 200 enthusiasts participated in a free 3-km distance.

Specialized teams for radio communication, mountain rescuers, medical teams, and physiotherapists ensured the safety and support of the competitors. The marked route, covering over 200 km, was secured with 8,000 signs, 1,000 marking flags, and 7,000 meters of marking tape. A total of 7 tons of water and beverages and 3 tons of food were provided.
The oldest participant was 68-year-old Hristo Metev, who ran the 42 km distance. The challenge was no less significant for 64-year-old Ivan Simeonov, who tackled the 153 km distance. Among the women, the oldest participant was 60-year-old Vera Mitova, who took part in the 42 km marathon. Last year’s 100 km champions, Dimitar Atanasov and Elena Borisova, attempted to claim the trophies in the most challenging 153 km track.
